I spent the morning in front of the computer, hands poised over

the keyboard, waiting for inspiration to strike.

It didn’t.

Whatever fuel had fanned the fire the other day was gone, and

after a weekend away from the story, I didn’t know how to pick it up

again. Though the door to my study was closed, I could hear the

television downstairs. Every so often Lee’s mother would say something

out loud or laugh, and when she went into the kitchen for a drink I

heard the floor creak with her steps. I wondered what she was watching

that was so funny. I wondered what she was going to have for lunch.

Rice obviously, but with what?

I stared at the blinking cursor and wondered if she was getting

lonely down there by herself. Maybe I should go down and see how she

was doing. Maybe if I got up and walked around a bit, the story would

work itself out in my head and I’d be able to write it down.

Maybe what I really needed was a half hour soaking in the hot tub

to get my creative juices flowing. It wouldn’t be procrastinating but

more like…fermenting. Letting the ideas in my head come together and

stew. A few minutes in the hot tub would relax my body and my mind,

and I would be able to find the thread of the story, easy. It sounded like a plan.

I left the computer on because I was sure I’d be right back.

Quickly, I changed into my swim trunks; I preferred to lounge in the

spa naked but Mrs. Gui would be in the other room and I didn’t want to

distract her from Bob Barker if I could help it. As it was, I had to pass between her and the TV on my way to the sunroom. I flashed her a quick

grin and pointed at the sliding doors. “I’ll be out here for a bit,” I said, aware that I was doing it again, talking loudly as if she was hard of

hearing, but I couldn’t help it. Maybe if I talked loud enough, she’d at

least tell me to keep it down. I think I did it to fill the silence she

insisted on keeping.

She just looked at me, her face a mask I couldn’t read. Raising the

towel I held in one hand I said, “I’m in the hot tub if you need me for

anything.”

I didn’t expect she would.

She watched me cross the room, watched my hands fumble with

the lock. With something akin to relief, I pulled the sliding door shut

behind me and cut off her view.

I ran the water as hot as I could get it, and when I slipped into the

bubbles, a fine sweat broke out along my neck and brow, beading in my

facial hair. I sank down gratefully, the water tenderizing my flesh

through to my bones. Leaning back against the side of the spa, I tried to concentrate on my story but my thoughts wouldn’t cooperate—my mind

was blank.

Over the churning water I could faintly hear the TV, in the

distance somewhere, on the other side of the door, a world away.
